My best mono school type player is an Audiotronics 304E which has a pretty large oval speaker that sounds better than any of my other suitcase players. The EDR12, with its front facing stereo speakers is what a "Cruiser" would have been if it was built in the 1960s! (Thanks for reminding me, I need to order a stylus from V-M Audio). Vinyl Master, I definitely have to count my two Crosleys amongst my modern junk players (the other one is a CR-49, which is as good as, if not better than, a 1970s-ish Califone 1010AV school player which I also have, but maybe not as robust), but also in that pile are an Emerson Big Big kiddie player from, I think, the 1970s, a plastic "De Jay" kiddie player (both of which sound better than my Cruiser when it was stock), a Webcore B-1034-1 "Maestro" suitcase player waiting for the bench, and an RCA EDR12 currently on the bench getting cleaned up. I was also running the Fireworks display that evening. I had the proper fireworks shooter's permit, a permit for the display, and set everything up for safety. One of the State Fire Marshals came to visit. I used 40 three inch salutes (similar to huge cherry bombs - no shrapnel!). I actually did this one time for the Maryland Symphony at Antietam Battlefield. Also the Crosley probably does not have the properties that help create a great sounding boom. The worst is that the Crosley will generate shrapnel! Also the local constables will want to discuss this use with you. Here is a way to make a modern Crosley sound pretty good on one cannon shot in the 1812 Overture.ΔΆ) Fill it with flash powder (very fast burning gunpowder) and add a long piece of quick match (fuse). My troublemaker side has finally taken over my mind.
